Healthy Dental Habits – Prevention Is The Key
Learning healthy dental habits at a young age can help children live a lifetime with healthier teeth. The first healthy dental habit younger children learn is how to brush their teeth at least twice a day if not after every meal. While it isn’t always discussed, healthy eating habits should play a role in maintaining healthy teeth. Also, visiting the dentist every six months from a very young age is a healthy habit to start with every child.
Dentists advise parents of young children to begin cleaning a baby’s gums and first teeth with a soft and moist cloth or a gauze pad to not only clean the mouth but to lay down the foundation for daily dental care. Each time dentists are visited by any member of a family, younger children should accompany the patient to the dentist office in order to become familiar with the sights, sounds and atmosphere so that their first trip isn’t too overwhelming. By the time a child reaches the end of their first year, it is the best time to schedule his or her first dental visit to maintain the health of their teeth.
Other steps that can be taken to teach or even correct dental health habits include showing a child how to brush his or her teeth properly and with the correct amount of toothpaste, which should be the size of a small pebble. Another habit that is beneficial to begin at a young age is to begin flossing teeth. The tooth health needs to be maintained on the surface and in between each tooth.
The best education about maintaining healthy teeth comes from both parents and dentists. Education and example are some of the best ways a parent can teach their child healthy habits for oral care. Visits to the dentist every six months are essential for dental care to ensure proper cleaning and regular fluoride treatments. Establishing healthy habits early on can help keep teeth healthy for a lifetime.
