Childs Smile – A Universal Joy Shared By All Peoples Of The World

A child’s smile is a universal joy shared by all peoples of the world. That is why the Barren River District Health Department is using National Children’s Dental Health Month to kick off the KIDS SMILE Program.

This program provides all children, ages 0-5, with fluoride varnishes that help prevent tooth decay. Kentucky ranks second behind West Virginia in the number of people who have lost 6 or more teeth to decay or gum disease. Kentucky is the first state in the nation to implement this program.

Fluoride varnish helps protect the teeth by stopping the formation of acids that causes tooth decay. Fluoride can also strengthen the enamel of the teeth, which makes them more resistant to cavities. When applied, the varnish is a brownish color, and tastes a bit like root beer. The varnish should be reapplied twice per year but even just once is better than nothing.

Children at most risk for tooth decay are from families with a history of tooth decay, low levels of fluoride in their drinking water, or limited access to dental care. Tooth brushing should begin when a child’s teeth first erupt, usually at 7 months. Brushing at this age can be done by rubbing a soft, wet cloth over the child’s teeth and gums.

This not only removes plaque from the new teeth, it also gets the child used to the feeling of having his or her teeth brushed. As the child ages, a pea sized amount of toothpaste on a soft bristled toothbrush should be used.

Brushing can be done in the morning, after meals, or before bed. The most important time to brush is before bed, because no one wants his or her teeth to be covered in food particles or bacteria while they sleep.
